This is a very easy-to-digest history of how the European Convention on Human Rights is neither democratic nor British – except by its historical adoption into British Law. Guernsey is also bound by it – but should it be? During the 2020-2025 Assembly, we encountered it’s impact upon our Sovereign right to self-determination, notably in respect of the ‘suspension’ of planning laws relating to the inclusion of ‘Affordable’ housing on larger sites. As described here by MP Suella Braverman – a number of other countries in the Commonwealth are not bound by it.
She takes a brave stand by publishing this video, but it makes a compelling case (in my opinion) for Guernsey re-visiting our inclusion of its provisions in our own laws. There are alternatives such as a Bill of Rights for example. We should at least have a conversation……
