New Members of Education, Sport & Culture

Successive Assemblies have dithered interminably over the future of Education – most particularly Secondary (following the move away from the 11+), but also given the need to replace or close La Mare De Carteret High School – which has been talked about for over 2 decades. In the meantime, The College of Further Education (COFE) has become The Guernsey Institute (incorporating, The Guernsey Training Agency and the Institute of Health). We have known for years that COFE is occupying some of the worst accommodation seen by retained consultants who have been advising ESC on future options.

The disruption and lack of certainty for our retained educational professionals across all our settings has been a huge challenge to manage and sustain in the absence of a direction of travel to resolve these historic problems. But, thankfully as of September 2021, the Assembly finally agreed what the model of Secondary Education would look like – and incorporated The Guernsey Institute into that vision – with approved plans for the Les Ozouets Campus. All affected staff have been negotiated with and roles and responsibilities agreed and allocated during the last few years. The old St Peter Port School has been demolished to prepare the way for the new Campus – and Phase 1 funding was agreed by the Assembly in January 2024 and is now underway.

We must not revisit this decision as a consequence of the 2025 election or we risk the future of thousands of our young people, let alone all of the very necessary vocational training and re-skilling that our economy must respond to. THIS IS A RED LINE.
