Hats off to the Guernsey Press and Matt Fallaize! They managed to undertake 17 candidate interviews in a week and I congratulate Matt in particular for remaining composed and non judgemental in the face of some bewildering ideas and answers provided by several Candidates! Hustings are all well and good, but you don’t get the chance to interrogate each candidate for 20-30 minutes on the key issues – or indeed the suggestions to address some of those issues being proposed.
You can access the full interviews on the GEP Podcast here.
Unlike Matt (and due to the fact that I am not standing), I CAN be judgemental! This will be a significantly important election, particularly in light of the substantial financial challenges the Bailiwick faces, notwithstanding a very uncertain international outside world. So the individuals we elect to navigate these challenges is very important. It is not clear to me that very many of the candidates (new in particular, but including some existing Deputies that I would have to suspect remain in denial about our true circumstances) – really grasp the extent of changes this next term must address.
It is very helpful to now have each of the manifestos (as will appear in the printed booklet) available, since these can be correlated with the actual Guernsey Press interviews and an overall personal summary provided. You may or may not agree with those summaries – but as a voter, I am entitled to an opinion! So you will find those views on a weekly basis attached to the individual candidates as they become available.
This week, I am concentrating on the aforementioned 17 candidates and their manifesto and associated commentary can be found under each of the following links.
