Since I published my post on the risk posed to our economy by pursuing a Territorial Tax independently of Jersey and the IOM, it has attracted considerable interest. I have also had a request from a couple of candidates in it who wanted to make it clear they had no desire to pursue a Territorial Tax solution, but were only interested in a Fair solution – whatever else that might end up looking like. And I am happy to do that of course.
The reason that I included a number of individuals in that original post was because in his GEP blog interview, Charles Parkinson alluded to there being a number of candidates who are supportive of his policy, but have chosen not to make it known to electors. And this was in the context of discussing his website (FairTax.gg) where he specifically stated, he would not be publishing a list of those individuals.
Now, as I made abundantly clear, pursuit of a Territorial tax independently could be very damaging for our economy and so the electorate not only have a right, but should demand to know which of these ‘shy’ deputies are supportive, in case they disagree with the suggested direction of travel. That is what transparent Government should look like.
Consequently, and at some speed, I have been able to establish a number of candidates who certainly do not support a Territorial Tax, including all members of Forward Guernsey – and they are listed below.
I certainly do not claim this to be exhaustive by any means, but as postal voters in particular may well be making their choices right now, I felt getting this list out asap was important. And I certainly don’t want to associate any candidate incorrectly as a Territorial Tax supporter.
Very happy to have confirmation from any other candidates who feel similarly and of course I will update as needs be.
